Hans Morgenthaler

1890–1928

A Swiss writer, geologist, and mountaineer, he brought a scientist’s eye and an adventurer’s spirit to his books. His life was short, but his work still carries the energy of the mountains and the curiosity of a natural observer.

About the author

Born in Burgdorf, Switzerland, on June 4, 1890, Hans Morgenthaler studied zoology and botany at ETH Zurich and later studied geology in Bern. He also published scientific work, but he is remembered above all as a literary voice shaped by the natural world and by his love of the Alps.

His first book, Ihr Berge, appeared in 1916 and grew out of notes from mountaineering life, paired with his own drawings. Writing under the name Hamo as well, he moved between literature, science, and alpine experience in a way that gave his work a vivid, personal tone.

Morgenthaler died in Bern on March 16, 1928, at just 37 years old. Even with a brief life, he left behind the picture of a many-sided author: part observer, part explorer, and deeply connected to the landscapes he wrote about.
