About the author

Born in Burgdorf, Switzerland, in 1890, Hans Morgenthaler also wrote under the name Hamo. He studied botany and zoology at ETH Zurich, later turned to geology, and became known not only as a writer but also as a passionate alpinist.

From 1917 to 1920 he worked as a geologist in Siam, now Thailand. That stay inspired some of his best-known books, including Matahari, in which he wrote about the landscapes, people, and atmosphere he encountered in Southeast Asia.

His life was short and restless. Illness shaped his later years, and he died in Bern in 1928 at just 37. Even so, he left behind writing that blends observation, travel, and adventure in a very personal way.
