A German geographer, mountaineer, and publisher, he is best known for leading the first recorded ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. His travels and research helped shape European understanding of East Africa in the late nineteenth century.

by Hans Meyer
Born in 1858 in Hildburghausen, Hans Meyer studied natural sciences and history before joining his family’s publishing business in Leipzig. Alongside his work as a publisher, he built a reputation as a geographer and explorer with a strong interest in mountains, volcanoes, and the landscapes of Africa and the Americas.
He is most closely associated with Mount Kilimanjaro. After earlier attempts, he reached the summit in 1889 with Austrian climber Ludwig Purtscheller and local guide Yohane Lauwo, becoming known in Europe as the leader of the first recorded successful ascent. He later wrote about his expeditions and became an important public voice in geography and travel writing.
Meyer also held an academic role in Leipzig and remained active in geographical research for many years. He died in 1929, leaving behind a legacy tied to exploration, publishing, and the European study of East Africa.
