About the author

Hanns Günther was the pen name of Walter de Haas, born Walter Siede on March 19, 1886. A German author, translator, and editor, he later lived in Zurich, Switzerland, where he continued publishing under the name Hanns Günther until his death in 1969.

He began publishing in 1912, focusing on electrical engineering, radio, technology, and popular science. Many of his books appeared through Franckh’sche Verlagshandlung and its Kosmos series, where his ability to combine technical accuracy with an accessible style made complex subjects approachable.

Among his best-known works are Das Buch von der Eisenbahn and In hundert Jahren – Die künftige Energieversorgung der Welt. The latter, published in 1931, explored possible alternatives to coal, including geothermal, solar, wave, and tidal power—ideas that give his work a strikingly forward-looking quality.
