Born in Pennsylvania in 1837, Hampton Sidney Thomas served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and rose to the rank of major in the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry. He received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Amelia Springs in Virginia on April 5, 1865.
Beyond his military service, Thomas also wrote and published works that have been preserved in modern digital archives, linking his name not only to wartime history but also to the printed record of his era. That combination of soldier and writer makes him an especially interesting figure for listeners drawn to firsthand voices from the 19th century.
