About the author

Born in Kentucky in 1922, Harold G. "Hal" Moore went on to become a U.S. Army lieutenant general whose military career spanned World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He is especially remembered for commanding the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, one of the Vietnam War's most closely studied engagements.

As an author, he is best known for We Were Soldiers Once...and Young, written with journalist Joseph L. Galloway. The book became a widely read account of Ia Drang and later inspired the film We Were Soldiers. He also co-wrote We Are Soldiers Still, returning to the battle's legacy decades later.

Moore's writing carries the authority of lived experience, but also a strong sense of duty to remember others clearly and fairly. That combination of leadership, humility, and firsthand witness gives his work lasting power for readers interested in war memoir, military history, and personal courage.
