About the author

Born in 1892, Harold Vandervoort Walsh was an American architect, writer, and teacher whose work centered on making building knowledge easier to understand. He studied at the City College of New York and earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Columbia in 1915.

Walsh later taught architecture at Columbia and also worked as a consultant architect. His best-known book, The Construction of the Small House (1923), was written for ordinary readers as well as professionals, explaining the methods, costs, and practical decisions involved in building modest American homes.

He also wrote or contributed to other instructional works, including Your House Begins with You and Blueprint Reading Made Easy. Across his writing, the same theme stands out: a gift for translating technical subjects into clear, usable advice.
