About the author

Born in Eindhoven in 1852, Henri van Kol trained as a hydraulic engineer before working in the Dutch East Indies. During these years he became deeply interested in socialism, and that mix of technical training, political conviction, and colonial experience shaped both his public life and his writing.

Van Kol later became an important figure in Dutch social democracy, helping found the Social Democratic Workers' Party and serving in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the Netherlands. He also took part in international socialist debates, especially on colonial policy, which gave his books and articles a strong political edge.

As an author, he is remembered for works that drew on travel, public affairs, and the realities of colonial society. His writing offers modern readers a vivid window into the arguments, ambitions, and contradictions of his era.
