Born in Aalten on January 23, 1869, Herman Theodorus Obbink became a Dutch Reformed minister before building a wider career as a theologian and scholar of religion. He later taught first at the University of Amsterdam and then at Utrecht University, where he served as professor of the history of religion and related theological subjects.
Obbink is remembered especially for his work in biblical scholarship and Bible translation. He wrote on the Old Testament, the religions of the ancient Near East, and the background of biblical stories, bringing academic learning into books that were still approachable for non-specialists.
He died in Utrecht on December 29, 1947. For readers today, his appeal lies in the way he combined serious scholarship with a broad, lively interest in the world behind the Bible.
