Born in Drachten on December 13, 1871, Herman Theodoor Colenbrander became one of the leading Dutch historians of his generation. He is remembered as an early driving force behind the Dutch state’s historical publications program and later as a professor of history at Leiden University.

Alongside his academic work, he was active in literary and intellectual life as an editor of the long-running Dutch journal De Gids. Sources also describe him as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1908, reflecting the esteem he earned during his career.

Colenbrander died in Leiden on October 8, 1945. His legacy rests on both his own historical writing and his role in organizing, editing, and preserving major sources for the study of Dutch history.
