About the author

Born in Flensburg on August 19, 1808, Hans Lassen Martensen became one of Denmark's best-known church thinkers. He studied in Copenhagen, was ordained in the Danish Church, and built his career as a scholar and teacher of theology.

Martensen served as a professor at the University of Copenhagen and later became Bishop of the Diocese of Zealand. His writing was strongly shaped by German idealist philosophy, especially Hegel, and he became known for ambitious attempts to connect Lutheran Christianity with broader philosophical ideas.

He remains an important figure in the history of theology partly because of his role in Danish intellectual life and partly because he was a contemporary of Søren Kierkegaard, who criticized him sharply. Martensen died in Copenhagen on February 3, 1884.
