About the author

Born on December 5, 1906, Herbert Girton Deignan studied at Princeton University and then went to northern Siam, where he taught at Prince Royal College in Chiang Mai. That time abroad shaped the work he became known for: the study of Southeast Asian birds, especially those of Thailand.

Deignan later built his career as an ornithologist and became widely recognized as a leading authority on Thai birdlife. He was associated with the Smithsonian, and his publications and specimen collecting helped document the region's birds in a way that proved valuable to later researchers.

He died on March 15, 1968. Although he is not a household name, Deignan remains an important figure in twentieth-century ornithology, particularly for readers interested in natural history, exploration, and the scientific study of Asian bird species.
