About the author

Born in Wells, Somerset, in 1869, Herbert Ernest Balch left school at 14 and began working for the Post Office, eventually becoming a postmaster. Alongside that day job, he built a remarkable second life as an archaeologist, geologist, naturalist, and caver.

Balch became especially known for exploring and mapping caves in the Mendip Hills, including work around Wookey Hole. Sources credit him with pioneering techniques later used by modern cavers, and with uncovering artifacts that deepened understanding of earlier human life in the region.

He was also a founder member of the Wells Natural History and Archaeological Society and played a central role in establishing the Wells & Mendip Museum, drawing heavily on his own collections and enthusiasm for local heritage. He died in 1958, but his reputation in Somerset remains closely tied to both cave exploration and the museum he helped create.
