About the author

Born in Wells, Somerset, in 1869, Herbert Ernest Balch became known as an English archaeologist, naturalist, geologist, and one of the early great explorers of the Mendip caves. He is especially remembered for investigating the underground landscapes of the Mendip Hills and for helping develop techniques that later cavers built on.

Balch was deeply connected to Wells and its surrounding countryside. Beyond his fieldwork, he also played an important role in local museum life, serving as a founding curator connected with what is now Wells Museum. His interests ranged widely across caves, rocks, fossils, archaeology, and the history of Somerset, and those interests shaped the books and articles he produced.

For readers, Balch offers more than scientific detail: his writing opens a door into an age of discovery, when much of the subterranean world still felt mysterious. He died in 1958, but he remains an important figure in the story of British caving and local historical study.
