About the author

Born in London on February 1, 1878, Henry Christopher Bailey was educated at the City of London School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He began publishing while still young and spent years in journalism, including work for the Daily Telegraph, before becoming widely known as a novelist and short-story writer.

His reputation rests chiefly on detective fiction, especially the stories featuring Reggie Fortune, a medically trained investigator whose cases often mix wit with a much darker sense of human motive than many of his Golden Age peers. Bailey also wrote mysteries featuring Joshua Clunk, and his work was admired for its sharp plotting and atmosphere.

He died on March 24, 1961, in Llanfairfechan, North Wales. Though not always as famous now as some of his contemporaries, he remains a rewarding discovery for readers who enjoy classic British crime fiction with intelligence, precision, and a slightly unsettling edge.
