About the author

Born in Meerut, India, in 1858, Harold Carmichael Wylly was educated in England and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst before beginning a long career in the British Army. He served with the Sherwood Foresters and later held a series of staff and command roles, eventually retiring with the rank of colonel.

Alongside his military service, Wylly became known as a careful and prolific military historian. He wrote regimental histories and campaign studies, including works on the North-West Frontier and on British Army units such as the Sherwood Foresters and the Border Regiment. His writing is especially valued for combining research with the perspective of someone who had direct experience of the places and institutions he described.

He died in 1932. For readers interested in military history, imperial campaigns, and the traditions of British regiments, Wylly's work offers a clear window into the concerns and style of his era.
