About the author

Born in Albany, New York, in 1871, Harriet Alfarata Chapman Thompson was an American author and a member of a prominent Black family in the city. She graduated from Albany High School and later studied at Albany Business College.

Alongside her writing, she worked in the catalog department of the New York State Library and is remembered as a trained stenographer who assisted Melvil Dewey. Her best-known work is Idealia: A Utopia Dream; Or, Resthaven, a utopian novel published around the time of her death and later recognized by readers and reference works interested in early speculative fiction.

Thompson died on June 9, 1922. Though only a small body of work is widely known today, Idealia has helped preserve her place in American literary history, especially in discussions of Black women writers and overlooked visions of utopian fiction.
