About the author

Born Sibylle de Riqueti de Mirabeau in Brittany in 1849, she was a French writer who published under the name Gyp. She began publishing in the 1880s and went on to write novels, short pieces for magazines, and plays, becoming a well-known literary figure in France.

Gyp was especially admired for lively dialogue, social observation, and a quick, satirical touch. Many of her stories focus on manners, family life, and the everyday dramas of the French upper classes, which helped make her books widely read in her time.

She died in 1932. Although modern readers may know her less well than some of her contemporaries, she remains an interesting voice from the Belle Époque, both for her productivity and for the vivid picture her writing gives of the world she observed.
