About the author

Born in Madrid in 1844, Emilio Gutiérrez-Gamero y Romate studied law at the Central University and later became known as a journalist, politician, and writer. He was active in liberal politics and served as a deputy during the democratic six-year period in Spain, while also building a career in journalism and public life.

Alongside his political work, he wrote fiction and essays, and his name remained connected to Spain’s literary institutions. He was elected to the Real Academia Española and took his seat there in 1920, an honor that reflected his standing in the country’s cultural world.

He died in Madrid in 1936. Remembered as a versatile public intellectual, he belongs to a generation of writers whose careers crossed easily between newspapers, parliament, and books.
