About the author

Born in Paris on June 9, 1832, Gustave Droz was the son of the sculptor Jules-Antoine Droz. He was first educated as an artist and exhibited at the Paris Salon before turning to literature.

His reputation was made by light, lively pieces about domestic life, especially Monsieur, Madame et Bébé (1866), a book that brought him broad popularity. Readers were drawn to his humor, his eye for everyday relationships, and the easy, intimate tone of his writing.

Droz later wrote novels that moved beyond social comedy into more serious studies of emotion and character. He died in Paris on October 22, 1895, and is remembered as a French man of letters who brought charm and psychological insight to ordinary family life.
