by Gustav von Bezold
Born on July 17, 1848, in Kleinsorheim in Bavaria, Gustav von Bezold was a German architect, art historian, and museum director. Sources agree that he became especially known as an influential writer on art and architecture and as an early leader in the documentation of Bavaria’s artistic and architectural monuments.
He studied in Munich and built a career that joined scholarship with public cultural work. He later served as director of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, a role that helped secure his place in the study and preservation of German art history.
Bezold died in Frankfurt am Main on April 22, 1934. His legacy rests on both his own writings and his work preserving and cataloging the artistic heritage of Germany.
