Austrian fencing master Gustav Hergsell turned his deep knowledge of swordplay and honor culture into books that still catch the attention of readers today. Best known for Duell-Codex, he also helped preserve important historical fight manuals from the late Middle Ages.

by Gustav Hergsell
Born in Olomouc in 1847, Gustav Hergsell was an Austrian fencing master, military officer, and writer. Reference sources identify him as active in Prague, where he served as director of the royal provincial academy of arms, and his work reflects both practical expertise and a strong interest in the history of combat.
He is best known as the author of Duell-Codex (1897), a book on dueling rules and etiquette. He also edited and published important old fencing manuscripts, including works connected with Hans Talhoffer, helping bring rare medieval fight books to wider readers in the late 19th century.
Hergsell died in 1914. Today, he is remembered less as a literary stylist than as a vivid specialist author whose books open a window onto the worlds of fencing, dueling, and martial tradition in Central Europe.
