About the author

Born in Lübeck on January 11, 1853, Gustav Falke became a German poet, novelist, and writer whose work was especially associated with the lyric poetry of his time. Before fully turning to literature, he worked as a bookseller and later was active in Hamburg, the city most closely tied to his literary life.

Falke is remembered for poems and prose that drew on folk-song simplicity and Romantic influence while staying close to everyday experience. Readers and critics have often noted the warmth of his writing, its attention to domestic life, and its gift for finding beauty in ordinary moments rather than grand drama.

He died on February 8, 1916, in Groß Borstel near Hamburg. Though not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, he remains an appealing voice for listeners who enjoy reflective, finely observed writing with a calm emotional depth.
