About the author

Born in Vesilahti in 1855, Gustaf Adolf Heman was a Finnish priest, writer, and public figure. Sources consistently describe him as a rovasti or senior clergyman, and also note that he wrote under the name G. A. Heman. He studied theology at the University of Helsinki and was ordained in 1880.

Alongside his church career, he wrote fiction and shorter prose, with works including Kertomuksia and Kaksi tolppaa; Pohjalais-Maija. Library and author records connect him with posts in places such as Ylöjärvi, Merikarvia, Jyväskylä, and Porvoo, showing a life divided between parish work, civic responsibility, and literary activity.

He died in Porvoo in 1917. Today, Heman is remembered less as a household name than as a revealing voice from his time: an author whose writing offers a window into Finnish life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
