About the author

Born Väinö Gunnar Lindström in Kiikka on October 7, 1879, he later took the surname Sarva. He became known in Finland as a school leader, educator, and writer of textbooks, especially in history.

Sarva worked as a rehtori, or headmaster, and was active in Finland’s school administration for many years. Sources in Finnish and Swedish describe him as a member of the national school board from 1924 to 1949 and as head of the board from 1939 to 1949, showing how influential he was in shaping public education.

He is especially remembered for the many history textbooks he wrote or co-wrote for schools, including works with Oskari Mantere. Those books were used by large numbers of Finnish pupils, so his writing had a lasting effect on how history was taught. He died in Helsinki on March 13, 1952.
