About the author

Born in Mexico City in 1818, Guillermo Prieto became one of the best-known Mexican writers of his century. He worked across many forms—poetry, essays, journalism, chronicles, fiction, and drama—and built a reputation for writing that felt vivid, public-minded, and closely connected to national life.

Prieto was also deeply involved in politics. A committed Liberal, he served in government, including as Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and remained active during some of the most turbulent decades of 19th-century Mexico. That mix of literary and political work helped make him an important witness to the country’s struggles and transformations.

He was widely admired in his own lifetime and was often described as Mexico’s national poet. Beyond his public roles, he is remembered for capturing local customs, street life, and the tone of everyday speech, giving his work an immediacy that still makes him stand out today.
