Born in England and later naturalized in Portugal, this Azorean writer moved easily between public life and literary work. His books range from poetry and historical writing to fiction, including a late-19th-century imaginative tale often noted for its adventurous, speculative flavor.

by Guilherme Read Cabral
Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1821, he was originally named William Harding Read Junior. As a boy he went to Ponta Delgada in the Azores, where he was educated and later became a Portuguese citizen, adopting the surname Cabral.
Alongside his writing, he had a long public career. Sources describe him as a politician and senior customs official, and he also served in administrative posts in the Azores. That civic background gives his career an interesting mix of literary and public interests.
He wrote across several genres, including poetry, novels, and historical works. Project Gutenberg lists Um novo mundo, a 19th-century narrative remembered for blending adventure with imaginative, almost science-fictional ideas, which makes him a distinctive figure among Portuguese-language writers of his time.
