Born in Siena on January 5, 1884, Guido Mengozzi trained in law and later qualified to teach the history of Italian law. He also worked in the archival administration, with posts at the State Archives of Parma and Siena.

Mengozzi is remembered for scholarly studies of medieval Italy, including La città italiana nell'alto medio evo: il periodo langobardo-franco. His writing focuses on the development of Italian cities, legal institutions, and public life in the centuries after the fall of the Roman world.
