About the author

Born on April 12, 1831, in Danvers, Massachusetts, Grenville Mellen Dodge trained as a civil engineer before heading west, where his surveying work and growing knowledge of the frontier would define much of his career. He became one of the best-known railroad men of his era and played an important part in the push to link the country by rail.

During the American Civil War, Dodge served as a Union officer and rose to the rank of major general. He was especially valued for his skills in engineering, logistics, and intelligence, and after the war he remained closely tied to the great railroad projects of the 19th century, including the Union Pacific.

Dodge also served in public life as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa. He died on January 3, 1916, leaving behind a story that connects military history, politics, and the building of modern American transportation.
