About the author

Gregory Mason was an American writer, journalist, and explorer born in New York City on July 3, 1889. He studied at Williams College, graduating in 1911, and went on to work for the New York Evening Sun and The Outlook. Early in his career he reported on major events including fighting along the Mexican border during the Mexican Revolution and the Russian Revolution.

Archives and museum sources describe him as a newspaperman with a strong interest in anthropology who traveled widely in Mexico, Asia, and elsewhere. That mix of reporting and field experience shaped the books he became known for, especially works connected to Yucatán and the study of ancient Mesoamerican cultures, including Silver Cities of Yucatan.

He died in November 1968. Although not widely remembered today, his work still stands out for turning exploration, archaeology, and foreign correspondence into readable popular nonfiction for general audiences.
