About the author

Born in Oliva, in the Kingdom of Valencia, Gregorio Mayans y Siscar (1699–1781) became one of the most important Spanish humanists of the 18th century. He studied law, but his reputation grew through scholarship: history, philology, literary criticism, and the editing of major Spanish texts. He is often linked with the early Spanish Enlightenment because he pushed for learning based on evidence, careful reading, and a return to classical standards.

Mayans wrote across many subjects and built an enormous network of correspondents, which helped spread ideas across Spain and beyond. He is particularly known for his work on the history of Spanish literature and language, and for his efforts to recover and present older authors with accuracy and context rather than legend.

What makes him stand out is the combination of range and seriousness. He was not only a man of letters, but also a reform-minded scholar who believed culture improved when texts were studied critically and history was handled with care. That steady, thoughtful approach made him a lasting figure in Spanish intellectual life.
