About the author

Born in Oliva, Valencia, in 1699, Gregorio Mayans y Siscar was a Spanish scholar, jurist, historian, and linguist. He studied in Barcelona, Valencia, and Salamanca, and later taught law at the University of Valencia. He is widely described as one of the major figures of the first Spanish Enlightenment, admired for his learning and for his efforts to bring clearer, more rigorous standards to scholarship.

Mayans wrote across several fields, including history, literary criticism, language, and education. He is especially remembered for his interest in classical culture and for editing and promoting important Spanish writers, including Miguel de Cervantes. His work combined a humanist love of texts with a reforming spirit, and he often argued for better teaching and more serious intellectual standards.

Although he worked in many areas, what stands out most is the breadth of his curiosity and the care he brought to books, archives, and language itself. For listeners interested in the world of 18th-century Spain, he offers a vivid example of a writer who helped connect older humanist traditions with the new ideas of the Enlightenment.
