by Gregorio de Santiago Vela
Born in Saldaña, Palencia, on November 28, 1865, he entered the Augustinian order as a novice in Valladolid in 1881 and went on to study philosophy and theology in Valladolid, La Vid, and El Escorial. He was ordained a priest in 1889 and later served as a missionary in the Philippines before returning to scholarly work.
He is remembered above all as a biographer and bibliographer with a deep interest in the intellectual history of the Augustinians. His major achievement was the multi-volume Ensayo de una biblioteca ibero-americana de la Orden de San Agustín, an ambitious reference work covering Augustinian authors and writings across Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines.
He died in Madrid on May 9, 1924. Later studies by Augustinian scholars have continued to describe him as one of the important bibliographers of his field, valued for the scale, care, and persistence of his research.
