About the author

The third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Princess Alice was born in 1843 and grew up in a family that placed great weight on duty, learning, and service. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse, later Grand Duke Louis IV, and moved to Darmstadt, where she became Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine.

She was often remembered for her thoughtful, practical nature. During the Austro-Prussian War she supported nursing work and hospital care, and later became closely associated with charitable and social causes in Hesse. Her life also brought her into the center of Europe’s royal networks as the mother of several children, including the future Empress Alexandra of Russia.

Tragedy shaped much of her adult life. Deeply affected by the death of her father, Prince Albert, she later faced illness within her own household during a diphtheria outbreak. She died in 1878 at just 35 years old, leaving a reputation for kindness, seriousness, and devotion to family and public service.
