About the author

Born in 1843, Alice was the third child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse, later Grand Duke Louis IV, and became Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. Although she was part of one of Europe’s most famous royal families, she was often remembered for a more practical and compassionate nature than for court ceremony.

She took a serious interest in nursing, hospitals, and social welfare, especially after caring for her father in his final illness and later helping during the Austro-Prussian War. Life in Hesse brought both public responsibility and private sorrow: she and Louis had seven children, and the family suffered a devastating blow when their young son Friedrich died after a fall.

In 1878, a diphtheria outbreak swept through the household. Alice nursed her family herself and died that December at only 35 years old. Her life left a lasting mark not only on Hesse but also on European royal history through her children and grandchildren, including Empress Alexandra of Russia.
