About the author

Born in London on November 14, 1862, into a prominent diplomatic family, Johann Heinrich Graf von Bernstorff went on to become one of Germany’s best-known diplomats of the early 20th century. He served in several foreign postings before becoming ambassador to the United States in 1908, a role that placed him in the middle of rising international tension before and during World War I.

Sources consistently describe him as a figure who tried to ease American hostility toward Germany and warned Berlin about the risks of unrestricted submarine warfare. After leaving Washington in 1917, he later served in German public life as a politician, and he published memoirs that reflected on the dramatic world events he had witnessed.

He died in Geneva on October 6, 1939. Remembered today mainly for his diplomatic work in Washington, he remains an interesting window into the pressures, miscalculations, and personal negotiations behind prewar and wartime European politics.
