Born on December 31, 1747, in Molmerswende, Gottfried August Bürger was a German poet of the Sturm und Drang period. He studied theology and law, but he became known above all for his poetry, especially lively ballads that drew on folk style and strong dramatic feeling.
His most famous work is Lenore, a supernatural ballad that became influential far beyond Germany. Bürger is also remembered for his German version of the adventures of Baron Munchausen, which helped spread those fantastic tales to a wide readership.
He spent much of his career connected with Göttingen and literary circles there. Although his life was marked by personal and financial hardship, his poems remained admired for their rhythm, storytelling power, and direct emotional force.
