About the author

Gordon John Ross was an English sports journalist and author, born in 1917 and died on April 27, 1985. After serving with the Royal Air Force during World War II, he moved into sports journalism and built a reputation as a steady, knowledgeable voice in British sports writing.

He is especially closely linked with cricket publishing. Ross succeeded Peter West as editor of the Playfair Cricket Annual in 1954 and remained in that role until his death, helping make it a familiar pocket reference for generations of cricket followers. He also worked on other cricket publications, including The Cricketer Quarterly Facts and Figures and Playfair Cricket Monthly, and served as a vice-president of Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Beyond cricket, he also wrote about football. His World Cup England 1966, officially approved by the Football Association, shows the same practical, fan-focused style that made his cricket books so enduring.
