About the author

After serving with the Royal Air Force during World War II, Gordon Ross moved into sports journalism and became closely associated with cricket writing and publishing. He was an English sports journalist and author, and he also served as a vice-president of Lancashire County Cricket Club.

He is especially remembered for editing the Playfair Cricket Annual, taking over in 1954 after Peter West and remaining in that role until his death in 1985. He also worked on The Cricketer Quarterly Facts and Figures and Playfair Cricket Monthly, building a reputation as a careful, dependable editor in the cricket world.

Ross wrote and edited books that reflected a deep knowledge of the sport, and his work helped keep cricket statistics, records, and seasonal commentary accessible to ordinary readers. Even when he stayed behind the scenes, his influence was felt wherever cricket followers turned for facts and perspective.
