About the author

Born in 1913, Gordon D. Gayle built a long career in the United States Marine Corps and later became known for writing about Marine Corps history and combat lessons. He graduated from George Washington University, entered the Marines in the late 1930s, and served in World War II and Korea.

He is especially remembered for his actions during the Battle of Peleliu in 1944, where he was awarded the Navy Cross. Over the course of his service he rose to the rank of brigadier general, and after retiring he remained active in military history, including work connected to the Marine Corps' study of tactics and doctrine.

As an author, Gayle wrote with the perspective of someone who had lived the events he described. That gives his work a direct, grounded quality that appeals to listeners interested in World War II, Marine Corps history, and the practical realities of leadership under fire.
