About the author

Born in Bristol, Connecticut, in 1847, Warren Ives Bradley wrote under the pen name Glance Gaylord. He became known as an American author of children's fiction, and despite his very short life, he produced an impressive body of work for such a young writer.

Records from Yale note that he wrote fifteen published books, along with articles for newspapers and magazines. Several of his manuscripts survive in the Warren Ives Bradley papers, showing how much he accomplished before his death.

Bradley died in Bristol in 1868, when he was only twenty-one years old. That early loss gives his career a poignant edge: Glance Gaylord remains memorable not only for the stories he published, but also for how much he managed to do in so little time.
