About the author

Born in Naples in 1808, Giuseppe Napoleone Ricciardi was an Italian man of letters, publisher, patriot, and politician. He came from a prominent family and became known for his liberal and radical ideas at a time when Italy was still divided into separate states.

His political commitments shaped much of his life. He was involved in opposition movements, spent periods in exile, and was closely associated with the upheavals of the Risorgimento, the long movement toward Italian unification. Alongside that public life, he wrote and published extensively, building a reputation as an engaged intellectual rather than a purely academic literary figure.

Ricciardi later served in the political life of the unified kingdom and remained identified with democratic and reform-minded causes. He died in Naples in 1882, remembered as a writer whose work was closely tied to the ideals and conflicts of his century.
