by Giuseppe Regaldi
Born in Novara in 1809 and raised in Varallo, he first studied law in Turin before turning fully to literature. He became widely known as a poet who could improvise verses in public, a talent that brought him attention in Italy and in other European countries.
His career unfolded during the years of the Italian Risorgimento, and his liberal ideas brought him trouble as well as admiration. Alongside poetry, he wrote prose and travel pieces, building a reputation as an energetic public voice as well as a man of letters.
Later in life he also taught Italian literature at the University of Bologna. He died in Bologna in 1883, remembered for the lively style, patriotic spirit, and theatrical presence that made him one of the notable literary figures of nineteenth-century Italy.
