Born in Mantua on February 27, 1835, Giuseppe Guerzoni was an Italian patriot, writer, historian, politician, and dramatist. During the Risorgimento he joined Garibaldi’s volunteers in 1859, took part in the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, followed Garibaldi in later campaigns, and for a time served as his secretary.
After unification, he built a career in public life and letters. He worked as a journalist and parliamentarian, and became especially known for his historical writing on the national movement. He is often remembered as the most important early biographer of Giuseppe Garibaldi, combining firsthand experience with a strong literary voice.
Guerzoni died at Montichiari in 1886. His work remains valuable for readers interested in the ideals, personalities, and political struggles that shaped modern Italy.
