1880–1958
A lively Italian journalist and man of letters, he wrote across history, travel, fiction, and criticism. His work was especially tied to Trieste, the city he helped portray for a wider readership.

by Giulio Caprin
Born in Trieste on March 22, 1880, he moved with his family to Tuscany while still young. After early financial hardship and the loss of his father, he continued his studies with determination, eventually earning a degree in literature in Florence.
He built a long career as a journalist, essayist, poet, and narrator, and published more than thirty books with major Italian publishers. He also worked for many years with Corriere della Sera and wrote under the pen name Panfilo.
Readers remember him for the breadth of his writing and for his lasting connection to Trieste, which became one of his best-known subjects. He died in Florence on August 17, 1958.
