About the author

Born in Milan on December 23, 1783, Giovanni Berchet became one of the most important early champions of Romanticism in Italy. He is especially remembered for the Lettera semiseria di Grisostomo (1816), an influential work that argued for a new kind of literature that could speak directly to a broader public rather than only to a learned elite.

Berchet was not only a writer but also a committed patriot. His life was shaped by the political struggles of his time, and he spent periods in exile while remaining connected to the cause of Italian independence. Alongside poetry, he also worked as a translator and prose writer, building a reputation as a literary figure deeply engaged with the cultural and civic life of his age.

He died in Turin on December 23, 1851. Today he is remembered as a writer who helped move Italian literature toward a more emotional, accessible, and national voice.
