About the author

Born in Florence on September 13, 1792, into an old noble family, Gino Capponi became one of the leading Tuscan men of letters of his time. He was closely connected with the intellectual life of Florence and was known for combining literary interests with a serious engagement in politics and public affairs.

Capponi played a part in the movement for Italian renewal in the 1800s and briefly served as head of the Tuscan government in 1848, during the upheavals that swept across Europe. Alongside politics, he built a lasting reputation as a historian and writer, especially for work on the history of Florence and the Italian past.

In later life, his scholarly standing continued to outweigh his short political career, and he was remembered as a calm, reflective voice in a turbulent century. He died in Florence on February 3, 1876.
