About the author

Born in Töreboda on October 16, 1875, Gertrud Almqvist became known as a Swedish author, journalist, and advocate for women’s issues. She wrote under the pseudonym Molly Molander early in her career, making her debut with Genom brottsjöarna i hamn in 1899.

Her books and articles often focused on women’s lives, rights, and sexuality. Sources on her work note that she addressed subjects that were bold for the period, including female homosexuality, and that she combined fiction with nonfiction in a career that also included works such as Den svenska kvinnan from 1910.

Almqvist was married to journalist and author Erik Brogren, and she continued writing across the first half of the 20th century. She died on June 24, 1954, and is remembered as a clear-minded, socially engaged voice in Swedish literature.
