Born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1937, Gerrit L. Verschuur built his career around radio astronomy, the branch of science that studies the universe through radio waves rather than visible light. He earned an M.Sc. from Rhodes University and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, then went on to work at major research institutions including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the University of Colorado, and Arecibo Observatory.
He is especially known for pioneering work on the interstellar magnetic field and for studying neutral hydrogen in space. Alongside his research career, he also taught physics, worked as an inventor and consultant, and wrote books that bring astronomy and earth science to general readers.
