About the author

Founded in 1852, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg was created to collect and study the cultural history of the German-speaking world. Over time it became the largest museum of cultural history in the German-speaking region, with holdings of more than 1.3 million objects ranging from archaeology and decorative arts to paintings, musical instruments, coins, and archival materials.

The museum is known not only for the scale of its collections, but also for the way it presents them. As both a research institution and a public museum, it aims to make cultural history understandable and lively for a broad audience. It is also part of the Leibniz Association, which underlines its role as a major research museum.

Its setting is part of the story as well. The museum complex brings together historic structures, including a former Carthusian monastery, with newer architectural additions, creating a space where the buildings themselves reflect the long sweep of European history on display inside.
