Born in Ghent on March 25, 1852, Gérard Cooreman trained in law but was also active in business and finance. Before reaching the country’s highest political office, he built a reputation through Catholic social and political work and became an important figure in public life in Ghent.
Cooreman served in the Belgian Senate and later in the Chamber of Representatives, where he represented Ghent for many years. He was also President of the Chamber of Representatives from 1908 to 1912, a sign of the trust he had earned within Belgian politics.
He is best remembered for serving as Prime Minister of Belgium from June to November 1918, during the closing phase of World War I. Cooreman died in Brussels on December 2, 1926.
