Georgiana Hill

1858–1924

A lively late-Victorian voice on women’s history and rights, she wrote with a strong sense of how everyday lives were shaped by custom, work, and power. Her books and journalism helped bring women’s experiences into historical view.

About the author

Born in Lambeth in 1858, she became a British social historian, journalist, and women’s rights activist. She was the daughter of George Hill, a printer, journalist, and newspaper publisher, and she appears to have grown up close to journalism and public debate.

She is best known for writing about women’s lives and the history of dress, including Women in English Life from Mediæval to Modern Times. Sources also indicate that she lived and worked closely with her sister Emily, and that the two remained together throughout Georgiana Hill’s adult life.

Hill died in 1924. Although not as widely remembered as some of her contemporaries, her work stands out for treating women’s social history as a subject worth serious attention in its own right.
