About the author

Born in London in 1806, Georgiana Chatterton was an English aristocrat, traveler, and author who published under the name Lady Chatterton and later became Mrs. Dering. Reliable biographical sources agree that she wrote across several genres and first drew attention with Rambles in the South of Ireland in 1839.

She went on to publish many works of travel writing, poetry, and fiction, with books inspired by journeys in Ireland, the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and the Near East. Accounts of her life also note her interests beyond writing, including music and art, which help explain the vivid, scene-setting quality often associated with her work.

Chatterton died in 1876, but her books still offer a window into the tastes and travel culture of the Victorian period. For modern listeners, she is especially interesting as a writer who mixed personal experience, social observation, and a strong sense of place.
