Born in Orléans in 1869, Georges Goyau became a French historian and essayist known especially for writing about religious history. He studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and the École Normale Supérieure, then continued his training at the École française de Rome, building the deep historical knowledge that shaped his books and essays.

Goyau wrote widely on Catholic history, European nations, and the place of religion in modern society. He also contributed to the Catholic Encyclopedia, and his reputation as a man of letters grew steadily enough that he was elected to the Académie française in 1922.
