by Georges de la Fouchardière
Born in Châtellerault on February 1, 1874, Georges de La Fouchardière was a French journalist, writer, humorist, and polemicist. He contributed to newspapers including Le Canard enchaîné and L’Œuvre, where his lively, irreverent writing made him a familiar voice in French journalism.
Beginning in 1910, he developed the comic character Le Bouif in a series of newspaper chronicles. The character became hugely popular and appeared in a long-running sequence published across several newspapers.
His literary work included La Chienne, a story later adapted into Jean Renoir’s film of the same name and Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street. He died in Saint-Brieuc on February 10, 1946.
